The quality of coatings on spectacle lenses has now attained a very high standard.
Exact matching of the thickness of the AR coating layers and an exactly defined temperature profile during vacuum deposition guarantee the constant quality and reproducibility of ZEISS coatings. The various physical parameters involved can only be achieved by the use of computer controlled, fully automatic machines.
There is a large number of procedures to check the quality of AR coatings. These techniques were developed, firstly, by using 50 years of experience in the field of coatings and secondly, by evaluating complaints concerning worn lenses.
All complaints received by ZEISS are exactly analysed to obtain information for the future development of new AR coatings.
Both in the numerous inspection tests performed in the course of production and in final inspection, every lens is checked in accordance with the company’s internal testing specifications which frequently exceed the requirements of DIN EN ISO standards. Visual inspections, hand in hand with fully automatic quality tests, guarantee a high quality standard. Quality is written with a capital Q at ZEISS. About 20% of all staff are employed in quality control and quality assurance to ensure that ZEISS can always provide the spectacle wearer with the best possible product.
