PRK, LASIK, SMILE –

30 years of refractive surgery evolution

Corneal refractive laser surgery has been widely used to correct vision impairment for over 30 years. Three generations of techniques, in particular, have shaped the field of laser vision correction.

Watch the video to experience these major milestones:
PRK, LASIK and SMILE.

Surface ablation
surgery

  • Subepithelial ablation
  • Excimer laser treatment
  • Extended visual recovery time
  • Patient discomfort

Flap
surgery

  • Stromal ablation
  • Excimer laser treatment or combined with femtosecond laser
  • Quick visual recovery
  • Some risk of flap complications

Minimally invasive, flapless surgery

  • Intrastromal lenticule extraction
  • Femtosecond laser treatment
  • Gentle treatment
  • No flap complications
(e.g. less incidence of dry eye)

1st Generation

PRK

With PRK, the visual correction is made directly to the surface of the cornea. Patients experience a difference the same day. However, visual recovery generally takes longer than with other procedures and is frequently accompanied by some discomfort.

2nd Generation

LASIK

LASIK is a widely used laser vision correction procedure, with which excellent results are achieved. Visual recovery is quick and patients generally experience no complications following surgery. A higher incidence of dry eye has been noted in some studies as compared with SMILE.

3rd Generation

SMILE

SMILE is a minimally invasive surgical procedure. Because it requires no flap, the outer corneal layer remains largely intact. As a result, there is less risk of post-surgical complications such as infections or epithelial ingrowth. The overall treatment is gentle and visual recovery is fast.

SMILE

Minimally invasive, flapless surgery

Small incision lenticule extraction, or SMILE, combines the advantages of PRK and LASIK. With this minimally invasive, flapless procedure, a lenticule is created inside the intact cornea and extracted through a small incision. Because there is no flap, there are no flap-related complications. It thus enables more biomechanical preservation and stability along with less incidence of dry eye. SMILE is redefining refractive surgery as we know it.

Find out why refractive specialists are full of praise about the qualities of SMILE.

“I operated on my own 18-year-old daughter with SMILE, so what more can I say?”

“Patients want quality of vision and a high level of safety. That´s why we choose SMILE. Small incision – great patient satisfaction.”

“We love doing minimally invasive surgery because it's faster, safer, more gentle on the patient and it delivers really good results.“

“Convincing, long-term follow-up results with SMILE mean that this is a technique that's here to stay.“
