(6/5/1862 – 7/21/1930)
Ophthalmologist and Ophtalmic Optician
With his empirical studies on the refraction of light in the human eye, the Swedish ophthalmologist Allvar Gullstrand created a fundamental theory on the process of vision, placing ophthalmology and ophthalmic optics on a truly scientific basis.

His work did not only lead to improved eyeglass lenses, but was also of pivotal importance for the development of totally new diagnostic instruments for ophthalmology at the beginning of the 20th century. Today, Gullstrand is seen as one of the founders of modern ophthalmology.

We would like to thank the Optical Museum of the Ernst Abbe Foundation in Jena, Germany, for providing us with photographic material.
